EXCISE Duty

The Indonesian Government recently eliminated luxury taxes applied on most imported alcoholic beverages. Everyone concerned with the tourist industry, operators and tourist alike assumed that the powers that be had finally seen the light and the end of the very expensive wine and liquor prices was in sight.

This however was not to be , on the 01st April 2010 the Government replaced the luxury tax with an excise tax. The old luxury import tax cost consumers between 40% and 150% of the declared value of the alcoholic beverage. The new increased excise tax varies between 140% and 600% depending on the type and cost of the beverage of choice. Unfortunately and understandably this new tax leaves everyone frustrated and in some cases very upset. This new tax does not just affect imported alcoholic beverages, it has also been applied to all locally produced alcohols, wines, beers etc.

This increase in tax is now being seriously protested by Alcoholic beverage producers, hotels, restaurants and the national tourism sector. We are hoping that the voices of reason are loud enough to gain the attention of the government who in their wisdom will then seethe mistake that they have made. We feel that these price hikes will not be permanent and this situation will be rectified in the foreseeable future.

We at Serene Villas apologize for the prices that must be charged in order to pay the exorbitant tax and hope this will not leave you with a bad impression of Bali.
